The Kuntz Brothers and the Fight to Save the Nokota

  • The story of the Nokota horse cannot be told without the remarkable preservation efforts of North Dakota brothers Frank and Leo Kuntz.
  • Decades ago, the brothers recognized that horses descended from the historic herds of the Northern Plains were disappearing.  While others saw ordinary horses, Frank and Leo saw something irreplaceable - a living connection to the history, culture, and landscape of North Dakota.
  • Through extraordinary personal commitment, they assembled and protected horses carrying these historic bloodlines and devoted much of their lives to ensuring their survival.
  • Their work helped preserve the horses we know today as the Nokota.

Whiskey Road Reserve

A Place for Nokota to Live as Horses

  • In the open prairie of southwestern North Dakota, approximately 700 acres at Whiskey Road Reserve provide expansive pasture where Nokota horses can roam, graze, and live together in a natural herd environment.
  • The land provides more than space.  It offers an environment suited to the character of these horses - open country, natural movement, and the opportunity to maintain the social relationships of a herd.
  • Whiskey Road Reserve represents an important part of the vision behind Nokota Wild Preservation:  preserving not simply individual horses, but the conditions in which this extraordinary breed can thrive.

More Than A Horse

  • Genetics: The Nokota is a rare, hardy horse breed known for its intelligence, endurance, strong feet and bone, athleticism, and ability to thrive in rugged conditions.
  • History: Deeply intertwined with the Northern Plains and Native American heritage, Nokota horses played an essential role in hunting, transportation, trade, and culture. Despite the disappearance of free-ranging horses across much of the Plains, small bands survived in the Badlands, inspiring Frank and Leo Kuntz to dedicate themselves to preserving the breed.
  • North Dakota: The rugged Badlands of North Dakota became a refuge for these historic horses. With the establishment and fencing of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, some horses remained within its boundaries, helping preserve a living connection to the region’s prairie heritage and history.

The Next Chapter

  • Frank and Leo demonstrated what determined individuals could accomplish.  But long-term preservation cannot depend forever upon one person or one generation.
  • The survival of the Nokota has depended for decades upon extraordinary individual commitment.  Nokota Wild Preservation was created to help carry that work forward - providing an enduring charitable organization dedicated to protecting the horses, preserving their genetics, and ensuring that this remarkable North Dakota legacy survives for generations to come.
  • Horses require care every day.  Land must remain available.  Important bloodlines must be protected.  Historical knowledge must be preserved.  And someone must plan for the horses that will be here long after today's caretakers are gone.  That is why Nokota® Wild Preservation was created.  Their story brought them this far.   Please help to continue the legacy, protect the lineage, and preserve the heritage of the Nokota®  by donating today.
